About this place
In Kyoto's Enmachi neighbourhood, Babyrussa offers a satisfying stop for Southeast Asian cooking. A cornerstone of the menu is Hainanese chicken rice, featuring gently poached, succulent chicken paired with dipping sauces and served alongside a nourishing broth. For noodles, the Singapore laksa is equally prominent, coating thick noodles in a broth deep with dried-shrimp stock and rich coconut milk.
Bak kut teh delivers tender pork spare ribs in an herbal broth served with rice, at its best when the meat-steeped soup is spooned directly over the grains. A daily biryani comes plated with achar, raita, and curry, letting diners layer diverse spices over the fluffy basmati rice as they eat.
The dessert and drink selections highlight regional sweets. Kaya ice cream served alongside crisp youtiao (Chinese fried dough) and cassata-style yoghurt ice cream make for cooling finishes after spice-forward cooking. The café menu is just as considered, spanning fragrant cardamom coffee and traditional kopi sweetened with condensed milk.
The dining space is arranged with table seating on the 1 floor and counter seats on the 2 floor, creating a calm atmosphere where solo guests can dine without hesitation. Because the owner prepares each dish single-handedly, visiting with a little extra time—unwinding as the aroma of spices drifts from the kitchen—fits the relaxed pace of the room.
